The objective of this study was to understand the degree of responsibility and environmental awareness, considering the performance of two social actors: municipal governments and the local community. A qualitative and quantitative research was carried out through a case study in the city of Viçosa, Alagoas. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were carried out with municipal managers in charge for the environmental area and 385 questionnaires were also applied to community members. The results showed that many citizens are not aware of the need to take care of the environment, with some facilities and difficulties in this process being pointed out. As for the public sector, the role of municipal management and its performance was described, emphasizing some points to be improved. It is concluded that environmental responsibility must be shared between both social actors, in order to ensure that the environment is preserved for current and future generations. The results of this research have the potential to contribute to the formulation of public environmental policies, especially at the municipal level, which seek to develop awareness-raising actions for the different actors responsible for preserving the environment.
